| Statistics Success rates depend on many factors. The specific diagnosis, prior IVF treatments, duration of infertility and, most importantly, patient age all affect the potential for a successful pregnancy following fertility treatment. As a woman's age increases, her chances at becoming pregnant through assisted reproduction decrease, mainly due to diminishing egg quality. Patients are counseled regarding their specific chance of success based on testing results prior to their cycle. Additionally, success rates also depend on technology used, physician skills and the embryologists' expertise. Patients are advised to keep in mind that sometimes, a comparison of success rates may not be meaningful because patient medical characteristics and treatment approaches may vary between different centers. Clinics are required by law to report their annual in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles and subsequent pregnancies to the Center for Disease Control (CDC). These figures are published each year by an organization called the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART). The figures are published two years after the cycles were initiated because live births have to be recorded. A full list of pregnancy rates from centers across the country can be viewed at the CDC website , CDC en Español. | |
